A cracking cup semi-final this morning in Millers saw Bohemians U12s edge out St Bernards after extra time to book their place in the final.
This was a meeting of two league winners, and it showed, with very little separating the sides throughout. Bohs started brightly and saw plenty of the ball in the first half, creating a number of good chances. Thornton, Burke, Holland and McInerney were all causing problems in the opposition half, but couldn’t quite find the breakthrough.
At the other end, St Bernards always looked dangerous on the counter, but the Bohs centre-back pairing of Jane Holleran and Savannah Feeney were outstanding, dealing with everything that came their way. Bernards finished the half strongly, and Bohs were content to go in level at the break.
Bohemians upped the intensity after half-time and deservedly took the lead when Mark Thornton finally found the net. He doubled his tally just minutes later to put Bohs firmly in control at 2–0.
However, St Bernards responded with a superb long-range free kick to make it 2–1 with 15 minutes remaining, before equalising on 52 minutes from another set-piece that wasn’t fully cleared. With nothing between the teams, the game headed to extra time.
Bohs continued to press and created several chances, while restricting Bernards to efforts from distance. The decisive moment came four minutes into the second half of extra time when Thornton completed his hat-trick in dramatic fashion. Beating his marker, his shot from a tight angle took a slight deflection and looped over the keeper, sparking wild celebrations.
A fantastic team performance and a well-earned place in the final.
